java plugin for firefox in UBUNTU sun-java6-jre Start: applet not initialized

In normal Ubuntu CD installation, jre is not installed by default. Even with Ubuntu Ultimate, openjdk6-jre is installed instead of sun-java6-jre


This is usually giving raise to a problem in firefox while opening the sites which contain java-applets.  The usual error message that is displayed in the status bar on the left bottom corner is:

Start: Applet not initialized.

To resolve this error one need to install
sun-java6-jre. For that;
open sources.list file as super-user. For this,


press Alt+F2 to open run command then enter the following and click on Run

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

For Ubuntu 9.10 and below:

Check whether the multiverse repository is enabled or not
ie; There should  not be any "#" symbol before the following four lines:

deb http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ your_distribution multiverse
deb-src http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ your_distribution multiverse
deb http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ your_distribution-updates multiverse
deb-src http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ your_distribution-updates multiverse
 
Here your_distribution will be any one of karmic or jaunty or intrepid or hardy or edgy or dapper etc...

If those lines are not found, Please enter them manually. If they are found, please remove the # symbol (if any) before them... 

 save and close the file...


  For Ubuntu 10.04 and above:


Check whether the canonical-partner repository is enabled or not.
ie; There should  not be any "#" symbol before the following four lines:


deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu your_distribution partner
 deb-src http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu your_distribution partner


Here your_distribution will be any one of lucid or maverick or natty etc...

If those lines are not found, Please enter them manually. If they are found, please remove the # symbol (if any) before them... 



  For Ubuntu 11.10 and above:
 
From Ubuntu 11.10 sun-java6 has not been added in canonical. Hence one has to add a previous version repositories to the sources.list file.


deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu natty partner
 deb-src http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu natty partner

 save and close the file...
 After this;


For all UBUNTU distributions:

Now open the terminal from Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal.

and enter the following commands...

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin

Open the terminal from  Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal and enter the following.

 For 64-bit system:

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libnpjp2.so 

For 32-bit system:

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libnpjp2.so

That's it...

You can enjoy the feature of java-applets...

For systems behind authenticated proxy, one can see...

Don't worry; While arriving at this window, the browser may hang hang for a few seconds...
